Most Commonly Asked Questions
What is a blue crab?
A blue crab is a type of crab that is found all over the world and is found in great quantity in the Chesapeake Bay. It is bluish - green in color before it is cooked. They are popular because of their abundant and fine tasting meat.
Where do your crabs come from?
We only serve Maryland crabs which are caught in the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. Our crabs are primarily caught in the Miles River and are shipped daily from St. Michael's in Maryland.
Why are the Crab House crabs (Miles River crabs) so much better than others?
Miles River Crabs are caught on trout lines 1 crab at a time and not by crab pots. This means that the crabs have not been sitting in a pot for 24 hours feeding on a rotten chicken neck or on eel bait. Crabs tend to absorb the flavor of what they have eaten and take 24 hours to cleanse themselves. In addition the salinity of the water of the miles river is low (brackish) which produces a better tasting and larger crab. The upper Chesapeake Bay is fed by fresh water rivers which reduce the salinity of the salt water.
What size are your crabs?
All of our crabs are #1 males (also known as Jimmys) and are at least 5½ inches from point to point. Most, however, are much larger. We grade our crabs by their size: medium 5½ to 6½, large & jumbo 6½ and up.
How do you prepare your crabs?
Our crabs are steamed, not boiled - fresh & alive Maryland style w/ spices. They are served hot & spicy.
Can we get cold cooked crabs?
YES!
What kind of spice do you use?
Our crabs are steamed & spiced w/ Baltimore spice, a special blend of spices whose recipe is a secret.
What is a Garlic Crab?
A Garlic Crab is one that is cleaned (backshell, lungs, & inners removed) & dipped and served in a very garlicky sauce.
Do you clean crabs for customers?
No, because it is too time consuming. Most patrons prefer cleaning their own crabs. If someone is unfamiliar with how to clean a crab, the server will be more than glad to demonstrate.
